Genesis 2 v10:-
"A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden"
Where a river flows life will flourish, where a river dries up life dies.
"As the deer pants for the water so my soul pants for you O God"
Most of Israel is a desert country. This is a picture of dry water courses; the deer is going to die if it does not find water.
That is me and you. If we are cut off from the Spirit of God we die - spiritually and emotionally
There is a river in Genesis and a river in Revelation 22, the last chapter in the Bible. There are 12 kinds of fruit from the 'Tree of Life' (Genesis again) 12 times a year (Every month!)
"And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations" ! How they are needed!
The green growth of the tree depends on the River of the Spirit.
Ezekiel 47 is the key chapter
The water of life issues from the Temple. Also v12 the trees "will not wither nor the fruit fail........because the water for them flows from the sanctuary".
In the New Testament the 'Temple' is the body of the Lord Jesus Christ. (John Ch 2 etc)
The 'Temple' is the 'body of Christ' - the 'Church' (1 Corinthians 3 v16; 2 Corinthians 6 v16; Ephesians 2 v 21).
Ephesians 2 v21-22:-
The church is "built upon the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone...............in whom you are also built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit".
John 7 v37-39:-
This leads us to John 7 v37-39, part of the Gospel for Pentecost Sunday.
Jesus says "He who believes in me .......out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water". Believers in Jesus are his 'body', the church, the new temple. We are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. It is through us that the river of life flows out into a needy world.
